● What's in the Ame tea set
| Piece | Quantity | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Side-handle kyusu teapot, 240 ml | 1 (with lid) | Brewing the tea leaves |
| Sharing pitcher with handle, 230 ml | 1 | Collecting the tea and serving |
| Tea strainer | 1 | Holding back the leaves as you pour |
| Strainer stand | 1 | Resting the strainer between uses |
| Teacups, 70 ml | 6 | Enjoying the tea |
That makes 10 pieces in total, as the teapot lid is not counted separately.
● A kyusu teapot and a sharing pitcher
The kyusu is the traditional Japanese teapot for green tea. Its wooden side handle, set at a right angle to the spout, is held in one hand: a simple turn of the wrist is all it takes to pour, without burning yourself.
The sharing pitcher receives the whole brew at once. The tea stops steeping and keeps the same strength from the first cup to the last, so every guest gets an identical cup of tea. The strainer, placed on the pitcher, holds back the leaves.
● Tenmoku glaze: one-of-a-kind reflections
The name tenmoku comes from the tea bowls that Japanese monks brought back from China in the Middle Ages. It refers to dark glazes that develop streaks and reflections during firing, reminiscent of fur or raindrops.
On the Ame set, the glaze blends bronze-green, cream and black tones, highlighted by a brown rim on each piece. This pattern is created in the kiln: the design varies slightly from one piece to another, making every set unique. Ame means “rain” in Japanese, a nod to these streaks.
● Making tea with the Ame set
- Warm the teapot, pitcher and cups with hot water, then empty them.
- Place the leaves in the teapot and pour in water heated in a kettle: around 70–80 °C for Japanese green tea, 90–95 °C for black tea or oolong.
- Let it brew for the recommended time, then pour the whole infusion into the pitcher through the strainer.
- Serve the tea into the cups using the pitcher. You can re-steep the same leaves several times.
● A Japanese tea set to give as a gift
Complete and ready to use, the Ame set makes a lovely Japanese gift for tea lovers. For a larger teapot or one you can use on the heat, discover our Ume glass teapot and Nami cast iron teapot, or all our Japanese cups and mugs.
● Caring for your tea set
- Hand wash in hot water with a soft sponge, then dry thoroughly.
- Not dishwasher or microwave safe: the teapot and pitcher have wooden handles.
- No direct heat: heat the water in a kettle.
- Avoid thermal shock: warm the pieces before pouring in very hot water.
- Don't leave the wooden handles soaking and wipe them after use.

● FAQ: Ame Japanese tea set
What's included in the Ame tea set?
The Ame tea set includes 10 pieces: a side-handle kyusu teapot with its lid, a sharing pitcher, a tea strainer, its stand and 6 cups. The teapot holds 240 ml, the pitcher 230 ml and each cup 70 ml. Everything is made of matching glazed ceramic.
Why is it called a 10-piece set?
The set counts the teapot, the pitcher, the strainer, the strainer stand and the 6 cups, making 10 pieces. The teapot lid is not counted separately.
What is the sharing pitcher for?
You pour the whole brew into it at once, through the strainer. The tea stops steeping and keeps the same strength, so every cup gets identical tea, and the last cups are no stronger than the first.
What is a kyusu teapot?
The kyusu is the traditional Japanese teapot, mainly used for green tea. Its side handle, set at a right angle to the spout, lets you hold it and pour with one hand, with a simple turn of the wrist.
What is tenmoku glaze?
Tenmoku is the Japanese name for dark glazes made famous by tea bowls that Japanese monks brought back from China. During firing, they develop distinctive streaks and reflections, here in bronze-green, cream and black tones.
Are all the pieces identical?
No, the glaze pattern forms during firing, so the streaks and reflections vary slightly from one piece to another. Your set may therefore look a little different from the photos, and that is what makes it unique.
Can the teapot be used on the heat?
No. The Ame teapot is a ceramic brewing teapot with a wooden handle: it cannot go on the heat or in the microwave. Heat the water in a kettle, then pour it over the leaves.
How do I care for the tea set?
Wash all the pieces by hand in hot water with a soft sponge, then dry them thoroughly. Avoid the dishwasher and microwave because of the wooden handles, and don't leave the handles soaking.
Is the Ame tea set a good gift?
Yes. Complete, ready to use and unique thanks to its glaze, the Ame tea set makes a wonderful gift for tea lovers and fans of Japanese culture, to share between two and up to six people.
How many cups does a 240 ml teapot serve?
One 240 ml brew fills around three 70 ml cups. To serve 6 people, make two infusions with the same leaves: this is the traditional way to enjoy Japanese tea, and each infusion reveals different aromas.
Can I return the tea set?
Yes. You have 60 days to return your tea set if it is not right for you. Shipping is tracked and our customer support team is happy to answer your questions before and after your order.
